Light Voices #7 | Raphael Pesch: „Catch the rainbow”

Die meisten Menschen in der Beleuchtungsbranche denken darüber nach, wie Licht auf eine Oberfläche trifft. Raphael Pesch denkt darüber nach, wie man es auffangen kann, bevor es dort ankommt. Als Doktorand am Karlsruher Institut für Technologie erforscht er Perowskit-Solarzellen – ein neues Material, das, wenn es auf Silizium aufgebracht wird, ein breiteres Lichtspektrum absorbieren und deutlich mehr Strom erzeugen kann. In dieser Folge von „Light Voices“ erklärt Raphael, wie er vom Elektrotechnikstudium zu einem Praktikum bei Porsche kam, wo er Rückleuchten entwarf, dann zu einem Start-up, das an von Rosenblättern inspirierten Antireflexbeschichtungen arbeitete, bis hin zu seiner aktuellen Forschung im Reinraum des KIT, wo ein einziges Staubpartikel die Arbeit von Monaten zunichtemachen kann. Er spricht auch über „Brain Gain“, den YouTube-Kanal, den er ins Leben gerufen hat, um komplexes Lernmaterial in kurze Videos aufzuschlüsseln.

Most people in the lighting community think about how light lands on a surface. Raphael Pesch thinks about how to catch it before it gets there. As a PhD student at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, he researches perovskite solar cells – a new material that, when layered on top of silicon, can absorb a wider spectrum of light and generate significantly more power. In this episode of Light Voices, Raphael explains how he moved from electrical engineering to an internship at Porsche designing rear lamps, to a startup working on anti-reflection coatings inspired by rose petals, to his current research in KIT's clean room where a single dust particle can destroy months of work. He also talks about Brain Gain, the YouTube channel he started to break down complex study material into short videos.
